In the Gap

Ezekiel 22:23-30 "And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, say unto her, Thou art the land that is not cleansed, nor rained upon in the day of indignation. There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey; they have devoured souls; they have taken the treasure and precious things; they have made her many widows in the midst thereof. Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they showed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hidden their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to get dishonest gain. And her prophets have daubed them with untempered mortar, seeing vanity, and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord GOD, when the LORD hath not spoken. The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery, and have vexed the poor and needy: yea, they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully. And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none."

Sound like modern America.

Normandy

When the Allied Forces at Normandy began to fight inland into the farmlands of France, they were meet with great resistance in the now-famous hedgerows. The German army used these natural fortifications with great success. The hedges were so thick that they could not be penetrated even with armor. The only way through them was to pass through the gaps in the hedges. The Germans placed a tank or other armored vehicle in each gap to withstand the Allied Army. Only after each gap was breached where the Allies able to press the fight deeper into the heartland and eventually defeat the mighty German Army.

Moses in the gap

Exodus 32:7-14 "And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves: They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, 0 Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people: Now, therefore, let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation. And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand? Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it forever. And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.”

While Moses was on the mountain with God, the people of Israel were in the valley breaking the very laws God was giving to Moses.

God even disowned them and called them Moses' people.

God was ready to destroy them and start over with Moses. He already had done the same thing in Noah’s day.

But, Moses stood in the gap and would not stand aside. Moses appealed to God through the use of God's own words and promises God had made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

God heard Moses and relented on punishing Israel.

Stand in the gap

This is similar to the situation Ezekiel describes in chapter twenty-two.

Ezekiel 22:30 "And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none."

In this passage, God is looking for a man to stand between Him and the nation of Israel.

Israel was in rebellion against God, and God was coming to judge them.

But God, rather than anxious to destroy this sinful people, was looking for a reason to stay His judgment.

A man to stand and intercede with Him for his people. A man to pray for mercy and preach repentance to his nation.

God wanted to spare Israel; if only someone would ask Him for mercy.

Their Temple and Synagogues were filled with money-grubbing charlatans, Gods laws being violated, corrupt politicians who steal from their subjects, religious leaders full of pride, violence everywhere, and oppression of those that are good.

But, God still looked for a man to rectify the situation and turn the nation back to Him.

But He found None.

Who will stand for America?

America needs men and women to stand in the gap today. This nation is involved in all that God calls an abomination.

Abortion has killed millions of babies.

Violent crime keeps rising and murderers are getting younger.

Politicians are getting more dishonest.

They're more concerned with their own power than the good of the electorate

God is continually being forced out of each facet of our society.

New Age thought and liberalism have taken over many of our old-line churches.

Even Christian colleges and fundamental churches are going liberal.

America is on the brink of God's judgment. Perhaps already over the brink.

The answer to all of America's problems is not in the next election, although they are important and every Christian should vote.

The answer is not in better schools, for our educators are far away from God, and do not even know there is a problem.

It is not in more police or better courts because the criminal justice system does not rehabilitate anyone. It only trains better criminals.

The answer to America's problem is in America's Bible Believing Churches. Only there, can God speak to listening hearts.

God spoke to Solomon concerning the location for the house of worship.

2 Chronicles 7:12-15 "And the LORD appeared to Solomon by night and said unto him, I have heard thy prayer, and have chosen this place to myself for an house of sacrifice. If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people; If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place."

God said that when He brings judgment upon His people with a drought, insects, disease, and other natural calamities, like fires, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes landslides and heavy snows that He would hear the prayers offered from His house of worship.

However, for God to hear, forgive, and heal, Christians must first

put away their pride,

pray to God for forgiveness, and

turn from their wickedness.

The problem with America is that America's Churches are filled with people who do not want to put away their sins. The price of repentance is too high for too many.

Will you seek His face and stand in the gap against His wrath?

Is it too Late for America?

Hosea 4:1-2 “Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.”

Hosea 4:6 “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.”

We are now doing all the sins that condemned Noah’s generation.

We condone and promote the sins that God judged in Sodom.

We are as Paul described:

Romans 1:28-32 “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenant-breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

I can find no better description of our society. We need to “stand in the Gap” NOW before it is too late.
